Russell Joined the Leslie Dark Charity team in 2017 providing his specialist not for profit VAT consultancy services to our Charity and other non-profit clients.
Russell joined us from Saffery Champness where he had formed and led their highly successful Charity VAT team as a partner in the firm since 1996. A former HMRC inspector, Russell has advised many of the leading UK top 100 charities and was advisor to both The Children's Society in their landmark High Court case in 2005, now estimated to have saved the voluntary sector over £1.5 Billion pounds in additional VAT recovery for not for profit organisations. Other leading court cases taken by Russell include Oxfam and Wood Green Animal Shelters.
Russell is acknowledged as one of the leading charity VAT advisors in the UK over the last 25 years and has advised household names such as WWF, Oxfam, Save the Children, RNLI, Cancer Research, Greenpeace, Friends of the Earth and many more. His Charity team won the coveted UK VAT team of the year in 2009 fending off competition from the big four.
Many of the matters Russell has negotiated with HMRC, and through the High Court and VAT tribunal have now become common practice throughout the sector. He prides himself on providing practical advice that is simple yet effective in reducing the burden of irrecoverable VAT on the voluntary sector.
With a keen interest in sport Russell is retained by both the Football Association and Rugby Football Union as their UK wide affiliated clubs VAT advisor. A family man, Russell lives in the West Country and is keen on gardening and watching sport.
